Police in Scotland have arrested two men in a major operation targeting organised crime networks using encrypted communications. The arrests mark a further breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into EncroChat data, which continues to expose criminal groups across Europe.
Specialist officers charged both men, aged 30, following their arrest in the Cambuslang area of South Lanarkshire. The operation specifically targeted drug supply and organised crime activities.
The two suspects are expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on December 24.
Operation Venetic continues
The arrests stem from Operation Venetic, a Europe-wide effort to dismantle organised crime groups that relied on encrypted communication devices. Police Scotland's organised crime and counter terrorist unit conducted the operation in collaboration with international partners.
Detective Superintendent Steven Elliott stated on Tuesday: «Today's arrests are a further outcome of the interrogation of EncroChat data by officers dedicated to identifying and disrupting organised crime groups operating in Scotland. Analysis of this data remains a priority, with advances in policing enabling us to continue progressing our inquiries.»
More arrests expected
Elliott confirmed that further action is imminent. «Working with partners we are now and will continue to be in a position to make further arrests», he said. His team plans to identify additional individuals who used the EncroChat network and report their actions to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
The work forms part of a broader strategy by Scotland's serious and organised crime taskforce to combat criminal networks.
Extensive inquiries remain ongoing, with police indicating that additional arrests are possible as the investigation continues.
