We would like to thank Madame Cazier, the artist’s granddaughter, for the information she kindly provided us with, and for pointing out that this work is signed Zavado, which enables us to date it quite precisely between 1920-1923, as it was under Zborowski’s influence that he modified his signature over a period of 3 years. Provenance : – Monsieur & Madame R., circa 1930 * – By descent to current owners Bibliography: – This work will appear in the catalog raisonné of the Zawado oeuvre currently being prepared by Madame Cazier. We would like to thank Madame Cazier, the artist’s granddaughter, for the information she kindly provided. * Mr. R. was a letter carrier and his wife a janitor at 3, rue Joseph Bara, both of whom lived in the janitor’s lodge in Paris. This mythical building was home to many artists, including Kisling on the 4th and 5th floors, Soutine and Pascin, as well as the art dealer Léopold Sborowski on the 2nd floor. Modigliani often came to work at his dealer’s (The website http://www.zawado.net/ indicates that in 1919, he [Zawado] returned to Paris, and later moved into Modigliani’s studio, where he died in 1920). As a letter carrier, Mr. R. had time on his hands and was happy to help with odd jobs for the tenants of 3, rue Joseph Bara, and their visiting friends. In exchange for his services, the latter gave him many paintings, including these two. Estimate 1,000 – 1,500 euro. Sold 1,600 euro
