We would like to thank Madame Cazier, the artist’s granddaughter, for the information she kindly provided. * Mr. R. was a letter carrier and his wife a janitor at 3, rue Joseph Bara, both of whom lived in the janitor’s lodge in Paris. This mythical building was home to many artists, including Kisling on the 4th and 5th floors, Soutine and Pascin, as well as the art dealer Léopold Sborowski on the 2nd floor. Modigliani often came to work at his dealer’s (The website http://www.zawado.net/ indicates that in 1919, he [Zawado] returned to Paris, and later moved into Modigliani’s studio, where he died in 1920). As a letter carrier, Mr. R. had time on his hands and was happy to help with odd jobs for the tenants of 3, rue Joseph Bara, and their visiting friends. In exchange for his services, the latter gave him many paintings, including these two. Estimate 1,000 – 1,500 euro. Sold 1,600 euro
