All right, we wont throw you out for the holidays. Prepare three bedrooms my sisters and my niece will stay over. Youll spend the night in the kitchen.
Margaret, does it matter that Im the sole owner of this house? I have the title deeds. Dont even think about breaking in the police will have you out.

Today after work, Victoria was heading to the shopping centre. NewYears was only two weeks away, and an old friend, Eleanor, had invited her over.

Victoria knew a big crowd would be there: the hosts daughter with her husband and children, a sister, and a niece who was a university student.

She often visited Eleanors home and knew everyone well, so she decided to buy presents in advance.

Choosing gifts was Victorias forte, and giving them was her delight. Already she could picture herself strolling through aisles glittered with tinsel, inspecting merchandise, watching the shop assistant wrap purchases in shiny paper.

Her mood soured the moment she stepped outside. In the car park, beside her vehicle, waited Rita the sister of her exhusband.

Hey, Vicky! called Rita. Why the delay? Im frozen to the bone.

Good afternoon, Rita. I didnt expect to see you here.

Why not? Weve been family at least twenty years, Rita replied. At least we were, until now.

Luckily were no longer considered family, Victoria said, reaching for her car door.

Rita stopped her.

Listen, Vicky, I have a request. Actually, its a request from the whole family.

What family? Ive been out of the picture for a year. Im not taking any asks, Victoria snapped.

Just hear me out. I dont know how you and Michael split the assets, but Mum still believes the house you live in belongs to our side.

You bought it together with Mike, and he spent ten years fixing it up. We all gathered there for Christmas and May Day. And now what?

Mum planned to host the whole clan in the house for her May birthday, set the tables on the veranda as we always did. And you turned us away. You drove off somewhere unknown.

I dont see why youre telling me all this, Victoria asked. I was just on my way to a friends, then I left. Sorry, I forgot to ask you.

And forget about your family gatherings in my house. When Mike and I divorced we agreed: the flat, the car and the garage went to him, the house to me. We signed everything officially. So now you can meet in Mikes flat. Thats it.

Vicky, Mum asked if we could use the house on the 31st as we used to. Lots of people are coming well have nowhere to put the whole family, Rita urged.

Margaret, youre asking? After twenty years of you demanding things from me, you finally ask nicely? Tell her I refuse. Tell the relatives to book hotels instead.

Victoria got into her car. The desire to shop for presents vanished. Ill buy them tomorrow, she thought, and drove home.

She and Michael had been together for almost twenty years. The house in question had been bought ten years earlier.

A year later Michael declared that at fortyfive life isnt over and that he would start a new chapter with his charming young secretary.

Victoria didnt try to stop him, but she also didnt let him walk all over her. She kept the house and the family savings; Michael took a twobedroom flat, a Toyota Corolla and a garage.

Since Victorias only remaining dependent was her universityage daughter, Michael didnt press for a joint account.

A few days earlier, Lily called to say she would spend NewYears in her dorm.

Mom, will you be upset? she asked. Ill be home for the holidays.

Accepting Eleanors invitation, Victoria felt assured she wouldnt be lonely.

Knowing Rita, she also sensed this wouldnt be the end of the trouble. She was right.

That evening her former motherinlaw called:

Victoria, arent you taking on too much? Youve seized Michaels house, and now you think we cant find you?

Fine, well all meet at my house for NewYears! The one where my son kindly let you stay. Got it?

Very well, we wont evict you for the celebrations. Prepare three bedrooms my sisters and my niece will stay over. Ill sleep in the kitchen.

Margaret, does it matter that Im the sole owner? I have the deeds. If you try to force entry, the police will have you out.

Well see who gets thrown out! Just get the rooms ready, well bring all the food, so you wont have to cook anything. Dont argue, youll remember this NewYear forever!

In my view, Michaels mother has gone completely mad this year, Victoria thought.

Margaret had never been a peacemaker, but her latest performance shocked her former daughterinlaw. Did she really expect Victoria to cower and obey?

Previously Victoria had been regarded as the best daughterinlaw; the other two had eventually accepted the motherinlaws authority.

Now, after the divorce, Margarets words only left Victoria baffled: what were they hoping to achieve?

Meanwhile, in Margarets flat, a plan was taking shape.

Rita, you and Alex are in charge of buying the provisions. Get everything you can in advance. Well cook on the evening of the 31st and the morning of the 1st.

Well handle the cold meats and hot dishes. Sarah and Emma will make the salads. Well pack everything in containers, and well borrow two sets of dinnerware from Vicky I know she still has them. When Michael moved out, he didnt take any.

Mom, what if she refuses us entry? Rita asked.

Let her try! There will be twelve of us the whole clan. Shell be embarrassed. Imagine the doors opening with Uncle Kevin and Aunt Lucy, Liam and Natalie standing on the porch. She wont dare shut them.

On the 31st of December at nine oclock, four cars pulled up outside number fourteen East Street.

Strange, said Alex, Ritas husband. The lights are off. Maybe Victoria isnt home?

Where could she be? Shes at home. And Lily must have arrived. Theyre probably hiding, waiting for us, Margaret chuckled. Ring the bell.

No one answered, and the door stayed closed.

I have a spare key, Margaret said. I figured Vicky might try something, so I took it.

She opened the gate and the entire party spilled into the courtyard.

Hold on, Ill open the house, she announced. Turn on the lights and bring everything inside; well set the table quickly. Vicky can hide if she wishes we wont invite her to the table.

About twenty minutes later a clatter echoed from the hallway.

The lady of the house has arrived, Alex announced.

But it wasnt the lady.

Victoria, meanwhile, was helping Eleanor set the table as the guests were due any minute.

The phone rang unexpectedly.

Is this Victoria Collins? Your alarm has gone off. The police are on their way.

There are twelve people inside, claiming to be my relatives and saying they have permission to be here.

I never invited anyone. It must be my exhusbands family. They entered without invitation.

Will you file a report?

Yes, but Im out of town and wont return until the day after tomorrow.

The uninvited guests were taken to the police station for a few hours. By the time they arrived at Margarets flat, the salads were already wilting and the hot dishes cooling.

When Victoria finally got back home, Michael called, demanding she retrieve the police report.

Did you change the lock, Vicky? Didnt you expect this? he asked.

I didnt replace it why would I ruin the door? I kept the old one and Im using it, she replied.

Then why did you lock it with the old key when you left?

I guessed your mother wouldnt be satisfied and would show up with her guests. I didnt want stray visitors damaging the door, Victoria explained.

So you deliberately locked the old door, knowing Mom had a key, and set the alarm? You provoked them! You wanted them caught?

Mike, your side could have celebrated NewYears at their own place. They chose otherwise and ended up in police custody. Im not to blame for that.

By the way, I had to tidy up and air the house after they left what theyd set out was a bit spoiled by the time I got back.

Why didnt you warn Rita about the alarm? Michael pressed.

Why not? There are signs on the gate and doors saying Protected by Police. Anyone can read them.

Tell everyone my mother, Rita, Alex and the rest that I wont be hosting any more of their visits, Victoria said.

This time Ill withdraw the report, but next time theyll face the full force of the law
