Aldi has reclaimed the title of the UK's cheapest supermarket for November, dethroning rival Lidl just as millions of households prepare for their expensive Christmas food shopping.

The budget retailer charged an average of £121.22 for a basket of 70 popular grocery items, according to consumer champion Which?'s monthly price comparison. Lidl came in second at £122.40, narrowly missing out on the crown it held in both July and October.

The price gap between cheapest and most expensive supermarkets remains substantial. Waitrose topped the list at £166.79 for the same basket, while Asda secured third place at £133.59. Tesco charged £136.20 without a Clubcard or £133.65 with loyalty discounts, and Sainsbury's came in at £141.62 without Nectar Card or £137.77 with it. Morrisons charged £137.40.

Savings potential ahead of Christmas

Which? retail editor Reena Sewraz emphasized that the ongoing battle between discounters benefits shoppers. «While Aldi is the cheapest supermarket this month, the discounters battling it out each month means shopping at Lidl is also a great money-saving option, according to our latest price analysis,» she said.

Sewraz highlighted Asda as another budget-friendly choice for those seeking branded goods. «The longer list of groceries shows that Asda continues to be one of the UK's cheapest supermarkets and a good option for those who want to choose from a larger range of branded goods,» she explained.

The Which? editor stressed the importance of comparing prices during the festive season. «With Christmas just a few weeks away, food prices will be a concern for many households, but our analysis shows it pays to shop around; simply choosing one supermarket over another could save you 27%,» Sewraz said.

How the comparison works

Which? analyzed a basket of 70 items including both branded products like Hovis sliced bread and store-brand essentials such as milk, cheese, potatoes and baked beans. The watchdog conducts these comparisons monthly across eight major UK supermarkets and grocery retailers.

The November results mark a shift in the budget supermarket competition. Aldi had consistently held the cheapest title since August before losing it to Lidl in October, making this month's win a reclaim of the honor.
